After working in life insurance career for 27 years, I have constantly heard from my peers and associates the buzz words, “I am independent.” If you don’t know what questions to ask after these buzz words, you will now be exposed to one of the “quicksand’s” of the life insurance industry...

I am “independent”, what does this really mean?
            Does independent refer to access to different company products, independent of company product sales quotas, independent of company bias and pressure and            independent of incentives and penalties imposed by career agency models.
 
Questions to ask to protect yourself from sales pitches

• Are you going to show me only products from the company you work for?
• Given the type of insurance policy that is good for me, who are the top 3 competitors?
• Are you free to show me and offer me all three products? Does your company restrict or discourage you from offering competitor’s products?

 
Actual sales pitch’s

• “I am independent, I am only an employee for benefit reasons.”
• “I offer many companies, but my company has the best policy.”
• “We have the highest dividend rate.”

 
Reality of sales pitch

• If an agent receives their benefits, health insurance & 401K from a company they are a W-2 employee of that company.
• There is no such this as “my company has” if you are independent.
• Dividend rates are one factor of expenses. This is a misleading statement and a clue that your agent is not independent.
